Program Note
Partner Sequence pays tribute to the dancers that I shared the stage with during my former career as a professional ballet dancer. There is no artistic relationship that is as physically, mentally or emotionally interdependent as partnering. This relationship is reflected in the instrumentation consisting of two violins of equal caliber that compliment each other in such a way that it is difficult to tell one player from the other. The pulse-driven and phase-like characteristics of minimalism readily lend themselves to dance, while the lyrical quality is intended to suggest the kind of emotional and physical vulnerability that is needed in order for great partnerships to flourish on stage.
